Living on the Altar
“Living on the Altar” (Romans 12:1) teaches that the Christian life is not driven by rules but by a response to God’s mercy revealed in the gospel; after showing humanity’s sin and God’s gracious work of justification, adoption, and assurance through Christ, Paul calls believers to present their entire lives as living sacrifices, connecting doctrine to daily obedience. This surrender is motivated not by guilt or fear but by the overwhelming mercies of God, leading to a life of continual consecration where every thought, action, and decision is yielded to Him as true worship. When we rightly “calculate” all that God has done—removing our guilt and giving us new life—the only reasonable response is total, daily surrender, making a life lived fully for God the highest form of worship.
